Taking Care of the Earth

posted by jmyrmel | April 18, 2008 13:22

Brendan W. and Stephanie submitted this post: Dear Parents and Students, We learned about taking care of the Earth. Here are some things you can try to do: Reuse stuff like plastic bottles, shirts for rags and plastic cups. Don’t throw away stuff that could be used again. Clean up the trash outside at the beach and front yard or at the woods. I hope you tried some of these things. Thank you.

A New Way of Sharing

We have been having trouble with our podcasts lately, so we're sharing with you a different way today-check out the class Voicethread.

Math Fun

posted by jmyrmel | March 31, 2008 19:44

The kids have started a new math unit with Mrs. Rich-geometry. Today they used straws to learn-look how much fun they had.

Science Experiments

posted by jmyrmel | March 31, 2008 19:39

We're learning about mixtures and solutions, and today we stirred up a great experiment! Have your child tell you what they learned. Here are some pictures to get you started.

In the News

posted by jmyrmel | March 08, 2008 14:47

Last Wednesday we had a visit from a reporter and a photographer for the Advance newspaper. They wanted to see all the great things the kids are doing with the equipment we received from the Best Buy grant. It's amazing to see all the ideas they've already come up with. Watch the paper to see them in action and hear all the details.

Conferences

posted by jmyrmel | February 28, 2008 16:28

Thanks to all the parents for taking time to come in and chat during conferences. It was nice to see all of you. I hope everyone is enjoying the midwinter break. We'll be back and hard at work before you know it!

Thanks again for being such caring parents, and sending such a great group of kids to me each day.

Big News!

posted by jmyrmel | February 24, 2008 12:27

Last fall I applied for a Best Buy grant to fund technology for our classroom. On Monday, February 18, I got an email of congratulations from Best Buy-they gave us a gift card for $2000 for our third grades! Mrs. Rich and I went to the store and bought lots of goodies for the students to use. I showed the kids on Friday, and they started a long list of projects they can't wait to start, using the digital video and still cameras. What an exciting day! We can't wait to show you all the things the kids dream up. One of the first things we'll be doing is making a BIG thank you movie and some cards for the Best Buy store.

Haven't you always wanted to hold one of these big checks?

Podcast

You can listen to the latest round of adorable voices here. Sorry we've been out of touch lately, we've had technical difficulties, but we should be back on track now!

School Board Meeting

posted by jmyrmel | January 13, 2008 16:22

Last Thursday night, 3 students from our class, and one from Mrs. Rich's class showed the Hudsonville School board and administrators what great things third graders can do with technology. It was impressive! They talked about using Voicethread, making podcasts and writing on the class wiki. In the spring we'll have a technology night so you can all see the incredible things the students can do.

There are pictures in the "Photos 07-08" album if you'd like to see them in action.

You can see how impressed the superintendent, Mrs. DeWeerd, is by Rayleigh's use of Voicethread to teach other students how to run a book club!

More Math

posted by jmyrmel | January 08, 2008 20:29

Did you know that perimeter is the distance around the outside (rim!) of a shape? The kids used straws to make triangles and figure out the perimeter. Who knew math could be so much fun?

Look What We're Learning

posted by jmyrmel | January 08, 2008 20:12

The kids have been working very hard with Mrs. Rich to learn about measurement. They used metric and customary measurements for a "measurement hunt" around the classroom.
