Kindergarten Update

posted by dnederveld | November 18, 2008 21:17

Thank you to everyone who has donated food for our 'feast' next week. The children are getting very excited and have been learning all about the first Thanksgiving in preparation for this occasion.

If you've read your Georgetown blog updates, you already know that we are in the process of switching our sites. I'm in the process of setting up a new blog page and am slowly learning the new tricks of the trade. Please be patient with me. I'll let you know when I've successfully switched over.

Our upcoming holiday program will be held on December 4 at 7 pm. The location this year will be Resurrection Life Church in Grandville. The size of this church will allow us to hold one program for all PK-5 students as opposed to two separate programs.

Doors will be unlocked at 6:30 pm. Please do not arrive prior to this time period. Each class will have an assigned drop off location, and these details will come home the week after Thanksgiving. PreK & K students will sit with their class after their performance to watch the rest of the program. (A map to Res. Life Church is posted on our school blog: http://georgetown.edublogs.org).

Winter Weather

posted by dnederveld | November 14, 2008 19:11

We had fun this Friday preparing for our feast. We made our Native American headbands, our turkey cups, and our story bracelets. We plan to share our bracelets with the 'Pilgrims' (the other kindergarteners) to remind us of the first Thanksgiving story.

The winter weather is heading our way next week. Please send winter gear with your child that is appropriate for the weather. We have 2 recesses each day and go out unless it's raining. This is also a good time to let your child practice zipping his/her coat.

We also had a tornado drill today during computers. The children did an awesome job of quietly getting into the hallway and covering their heads! To see more of what went on this week, click on the newsletter below.

It was good to meet with all of you at conferences. I truly feel blessed to teach your children and for the great parental support that you provide them. Remember that we do NOT have school this Friday. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Fantastic Friday!

posted by dnederveld | October 23, 2008 19:57

Wow! What a busy Friday! In the morning, we enjoyed an assembly led by the author of the Priscilla McDoodle books and had fun with our pumpkin math centers. The afternoon was filled with going to computers, having show-n-tell, and meeting with our 5th grade buddies. Check out our newsletter to see what else we've been doing in our classroom. Rock Like A Pumpkin

posted by dnederveld | October 15, 2008 21:43

The children have been enjoying a chant that was passed on to me by Mrs. Murphy. Here are the words for you to use at home with your child:

Rock like a pumpkin (3x) Just like that (clap 3x)

Roll like a pumpkin (3x) Just like that (clap 3x)

BOO like a pumpkin (3x) Just like that (clap 3x)

We'll start our festivities at 1:45 with a parade through our 5th grade buddies rooms and then down the bus loop for parents to see. Mrs. Nederveld & Ms. Lisa went up the hill to fetch a pail of water . . .

posted by dnederveld | September 17, 2008 15:09

This week while studying the nursery rhyme, Jack and Jill, each child's name was placed into the poem while he/she acted out the rhyme. The class had a ball tumbling down the hill with their "pails of water!" Check out our newsletter for more class updates.

Our First Five Days . . .

posted by dnederveld | September 11, 2008 20:58

Although not much paperwork has gone home lately, we've been learning many concepts and routines in kindergarten. Check out the newsletter to find out more. sept. 12, 2008.pdf

Our September centers need to be cancelled due to kindergarten assessments going on that week. If you responded with a volunteer sheet, I'll have the October volunteer schedule sent to you be next week Tuesday. Thank you for the great response of help!

Follow-Up Q&A From Orientation

posted by dnederveld | August 27, 2008 22:37

Thank you once again for coming to orientation. It was great to meet everyone, especially those kindergarteners! I had a few follow-up questions and extra thoughts after the night was through and would like to share them with everyone in case you might be wondering this, too.

*Blog Updates - I plan to update my blog each Friday. It will have the class newsletter and monthly calendars available to read. If you signed up on the email list, you'll need to visit the blog each Friday in order to stay updated. If I'm experiencing trouble with my postings, (because you know I'm still learning) I'll send you a paper copy instead.

*Nametags - The name tag that was attached to the pocket of your yellow folder is meant for your child to wear for the first day of school. After that, the children will receive a neck nametag to wear each day until they become familiar with school routines.

*Hot lunch - Lunch $ can be deposited 2 ways: You may use the hot lunch website link that I included in your packet to deposit money online or you may send an envelope to school, labeled with your child's name, grade, and the title, "hot lunch money." I'll drop it in the drop box for you by the office.

*We have 28 students in our class which qualifies us for a full-time paraprofessional. Ms. Lisa will be helping us in the classroom each day. This will allow us to provide small groups for instruction and also give us that very valuable extra set of hands! :)

*Email - Many people have trouble sending me email because the #1 in my listing is often mistaken for a letter "l". My email again is: dnederv(#)1@hudsonville.k12.mi.us
