PTC Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, September 9, 2008 ~ 7:00 p.m.
Media Room
Present: Kristi Fellows Number of Attendees: 18
Jamie Ham
Krista Lawrence
Carrie Clark-Berry
Welcome: Kristi opened the meeting and welcomed new attendees.
Music to Benefit Music – Bill Worst and Mike Rinnen:
· It is a non-profit organization that helps raise money for school music programs.
· They will be having an auction/dinner/concert on Saturday, November 8 to raise funds. Country music singer Steve Azar will be putting on the concert. You can also purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win a cruise or purchase “Pink Floyd” T-shirts.
· Last year Georgetown received $1,200 in music instruments from this program.
· More information available at their website: www.mtbm.org
Principal/Teacher Report - Theresa Reagan:
· The first week of school went well and students are getting used to school routines. Lunch schedules have been tweaked and seem to be going smoothly now.
· Georgetown is getting closer to becoming a “green” school. All school websites and blogs will be up and running by November 1. Make sure the office has your current e-mail address.
· School Messenger is a new automated phone message system that will be used to announce school delays, cancellations, etc. The system can call all Georgetown families and staff within an hour of an announcement being made. This will be used in conjunction with postings to local TV stations and radio stations. The first trial run has been done and went well.
· Trouble-free Playground training is taking place. This program will provide games that kids can sign out at recess time to play and encourages less competitiveness on the playground.
Budget – Krista Lawrence:
· Reviewed preliminary budget for this year. Budget will be voted on at the next PTC meeting.
· Walk-A-Thon and classroom baskets are the major fundraisers for this year.
· Discussed having Author Grandma Janet visit and present her Priscilla Day Program for the students. This involves two visits during the year where Grandma Janet and her illustrator will talk about respecting others as well as the process of writing and illustrating books. At the second visit students will share their own writing with Grandma Janet. This ties in nicely with our Just Write program. A motion was made to fund this event by Michelle Wieringa and seconded by Jen Ford.
· The 2nd graders have an upcoming field trip to Frederick Meijer Gardens, and a motion was made by Michelle Wieringa to provide $5 per student to help cover the cost. The motion was seconded by Jen Ford.
· Based on this preliminary budget we should end the year with approximately $3,500.
Popcorn Fridays – Discussed the need for more donations to cover supplies as well as looking into purchasing a second machine to help get the popcorn popped and distributed more quickly.
Walk-A-Thon – Staci Nieboer:
· Information and pledge packets will be coming home this week. Walk-A-Thon is scheduled for September 24. Lots of prizes and incentives will be given out during the event based on participation and/or the amount of pledges received.
· Staci still needs donations of water bottles to give to the kids while their walking and a few more volunteers.
Reading Counts – Angie Roon:
· There will be three parties this year to celebrate Reading Counts achievements. The first party will be December 5.
· There will be a meeting on Thursday, September 11 to start planning for the party.
· Angie is in need of many volunteers to help with this event.
Scrip – Krista Lawrence and Carrie Clark-Berry:
· We will be ordering Scrip every Friday, with delivery the following Friday, starting on September 19.
· We will also have some on-hand cards that can be purchased immediately, i.e., Speedway, Family Fare, Blockbuster. We will sell these on Fridays from 3:15-4:00 at a table outside the office.
· Discussed that we really would like to get this program going this year and for each family to try placing an order at least four times this year to see how easy it is to do. If each Georgetown family ordered four $25 Speedway gas cards this year that would equal $1,600 back to Georgetown!
Box Tops – Michelle Wierenga and Jen Ford:
· Information regarding collecting Box Tops and the schedule for classroom contests went out this week. You can either use the collection sheets available through a link at the Georgetown web site or send them in to your child’s teacher in a bag with your child’s name and teacher written on the bag.
· Goal for the year is $2,500.
Barnes & Noble Night – Kristi Fellows:
· On January 6 Georgetown will be participating in an event at Barnes & Noble where Georgetown will receive books from them in an amount equal to 15% of all sales that night.
· More information will be coming home later on this.
Griffins Game Night – Kristi Fellows:
· Discussed whether we should have another Griffins Game Night. Possible dates would be November 1 or December 6. Everyone thought people enjoyed this event last year.
· Need a volunteer to chair this event.
Meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m. Next scheduled PTC meeting will be Thursday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m.

Say it, Repeat it - "Word of mouth" advertising is more precise. This is an easy way for parents to donate cash to our school. For example, if you purchase a car at Harold Zeigler and tell the salesperson about Say it Repeat it and Georgetown Elementary, Harold Zeigler will donate $250 to our school! It is that easy! We had a few families do this last year and made $900!
Tell everyone you know and then tell them to pass on the word over and over again. Before you make any purchase or enlist any service, check www.sayitrepeatit.com to see which companies support the causes that matter to you.
