A Special Visitor

posted by rstadt | November 14, 2008 15:50

On Veteran's Day we had a special student join our class. My husband, Justin, had the day off, so he brought in some of his firefighter gear to show to the class and stayed to learn a little math too!

The kids thought it was pretty funny when he got a warning for not following directions!

Priscilla Day

We are so lucky! Today Grandma Janet and Craig Pennington the author and illustrator of the fantistic book Priscilla McDoodleNut DoodleMcMae Asks, Why? visited Georgetown and led two assesmblies.

Here are some photos from the second assembly. Mr. Pennington showed the kids how shapes inspire his drawings and also played the game Stump the Artist. Zachary V. from our class drew a tricky shape, but Mr. Pennington turned it into Elvis! :)

One more thing...

Our Halloween party is scheduled for Thursday, October 30 from 2:45-3:15. The kids may bring their costumes to school to wear during the party. (We will begin dressing in them around 2:30.) All parents are welcome to join us!

See you then!

The kids did a fantastic job! Here we are enjoying some yummy treats after the big walk.

Four friends from our class won raffle prizes and our very own Kailey won a lunch with Mrs. Reagan!
The event was a big success and raised a lot of money for our school. Way to Go!

Look at us Read!

posted by rstadt | September 19, 2008 16:09

This week we had our first Readers' Workshop share! All week long the kids practiced with Just Right books during silent reading time. Today, if they wanted to, each child had a chance to share a story in a small group!

Almost everyone shared a book! They were so cute! Here are some pictures...

If you are wondering about the interesting green fingers with red pointy nails that some kids are using, let me tell you about them! We learned this week that good readers point to words and get their mouths ready by making the beginning sounds. These fun pointers helped us to do just that!

Another Great Week!

posted by rstadt | September 14, 2008 13:52

We are moving right along in first grade! The kids had another tremendous week! In fact, on Thursday and Friday they had their first experiences with substitute teachers as I came down with the flu. I am proud to say that I had excellent reports from both subs, which is fantastic after just a week and a half of school! :)

Here are a few notes that I wasn't able to pass along on Friday...

1. Picture Day is Monday! Our pictures are scheduled for 8:55 - first thing! We are so lucky to have this time! :)

2. WEB books will begin Monday, September 15. I think a note might have accidently gone home on Friday stating that WEB reading was starting that night. Please disregard this note - all the information you need will be sent home on Monday along with a book to read!

3. The newsletter for last week will be sent home on Monday too. Here is a link to it, if you would like to take a peek: Newsletter 9.15.08.pdf

Have a terrific weekend!

Our First Week

posted by rstadt | September 06, 2008 14:03

Welcome to First Grade!

I couldn't have asked for a better first week of school. I am having so much fun getting to know your child.
Here is a little glimpse of what we learned this week. (I wasn't able to include this in our newsletter.)

Math - We practiced writing numbers and finishing patterns.

Reading - We spent the week working with the book Chrysanthemum and also started our Readers' Workshop in the afternoon. This week we learned that good readers pick "Just Right" books and reread to learn more!

Writing
- We began our Writers' Workshop this week too! I am so excited about the writing I've seen so far! We learned that writers write about themselves, use special tools and add more! Here is an example of our work:

Lily wrote: My cousins have a dog. When I come in he jumps on me because he is excited!

Social Studies
- We discussed school rules, playground rules and also learned about the Stop Light in our classroom.

Spelling
- Our spelling words this week and next week are: and, of & the. We practiced spelling these words and fixed sentences where these words were spelled wrong.

Thanks for all your helping in making this a great week!

Love, Mrs. Stadt
