Reading with your child

How to make reading a part of your family's everyday life.

  • Establish a routine of reading aloud in the evening-your children can read to you.
  • Have your children read the comic strips in newspapers aloud to you.
  • Keep books or crossword and word-finding puzzles in your car or bag for waiting rooms or other times when you have a few unoccupied minutes.
  • Listen to audio books in the car or while doing chores-it's not only fun but introduces reluctant readers to the pleasure of stories and increases their vocabulary.
  • Put a bookcase in each child's room as well as in other frequently used family rooms to show just what an important part books play in your family's life.

How to promote good reading habits.

  • Be a role model! Let your child see you reading magazines, newspapers and books.
  • Visit your local library together with your children.
  • Make an event out of your child getting his or her library card.
  • Talk to your children about the books you are reading.
  • Keep a dictionary in the house and look up words together.
  • Recommend the books you enjoyed as a child to your children.
  • Give books as gifts for birthdays, holidays and "just because."

Strategies for Reading at Home

posted by mwert | September 21, 2008 10:14

When helping your child read at home, several strategies may be used to aid in figuring out unknown words.

  1. Tell your child to look at the picture. You may tell him/her the word is something that can be seen in the picture, if that is the case.
  2. Tell your child to look for chunks in the word, such as it in sit, at in mat, or and and ing in standing.
  3. Ask your child to get his/her mouth ready to say the word by shaping the mouth for the beginning letter and saying the beginning sound of the word.
  4. Ask your child if the word looks like another word he/she knows. "Does bed look like red?"
  5. Ask your child to go on and read to the end of the sentence. Often by reading the other words in context, the child can go back and figure out the unknown word.
  6. If your child says the wrong word while reading, ask questions like:
Does it look right?
Does it sound right?
Does it make sense?

Summer Tutoring

posted by mwert | April 30, 2008 14:22

Dear Parents,

I can't believe that summer is just around the corner! Time to think about summer tutoring.

Your child has made great progress in reading this year! However, that hard work can be forgotten over the summer without frequent practice. I would strongly recommend tutoring for all of my reading students to maintain the important skills that have been learned this year.

I will be tutoring this summer and would love to have the opportunity to continue working with your child in reading. I am starting to plan my schedule and want to find out what will work with your busy schedules. I will be available Monday through Thursday from 9:00 to 1:00. I would like to begin the week of June 16 and end the week of August 4. I will be going out of town in July and will let you know the dates as soon as I find out. Prices are $25 an hour ($20 for more than one day per week) or $15 for a half an hour. Please contact me soon if you are interested.

Sincerely,

Maegan Wert
