The five senses, similes and metaphors, vivid verbs, colorful adjectives--these have all been a focus of 8th grade descriptive writing lately.
In conjunction with some great place descriptions they recently read in Jump Ship to Freedom, the 8th graders chose a place of their own to describe. They spent several days writing a good description that included good word choices, comparisons such as metaphors and similes, and details that appeal to several of our senses. Ask an 8th grader about the place s/he chose to describe!
We are now on to part 2 of our unit on the parts of speech. After spring break, we will finish that unit and tackle the huge task of writing a research paper!
