The Transition...

...from summer to school has arrived. Soon we will be back at it, and here's what will be happening in middle school math during these first weeks.

6th grade will start with Prime Time, a unit that focuses on properties of numbers, including odd and even, prime and composite, and factors and multiples.

7A is starting with Covering and Surrounding, in which we will learn about area and perimeter.

7B will enter the world of algebra (one of my favorite things!) as we begin with Variables and Patterns. We will go on a "bike trip" with a group of college students from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Williamsburg, Virginia as we learn about the relationships between variables as shown by tables, graphs, words, and equations.

8th grade will start altogether with a unit on statistics called Samples and Populations. In addition to reviewing methods of statistical analysis (like mode and median), we will learn how to find samples from a population, how to construct and use a Box-and-Whisker Plot, and how to write good survey questions.
