What's going on in math class?

We are making many new discoveries about the amazing world of math!

Grade Six just finished a unit on properties of numbers: prime and composite, odd and even, factors and multiples, and finding prime factorizations. Ask a 6th grader how to use the prime factorizations of two numbers to find their GCF and LCM! We are now moving into a book on fractions, decimals, and percents.

Today 7A finished a book about area and perimeter. Ask a 7th grader to explain to you how to use the radius or diameter of a circle to find its circumference or area. The next book we will study is Stretching and Shrinking, which focuses on similar figures and scale factors.

7B is finishing up an introductory book on algebra and will soon begin another that will dig deeper into linear relationships as shown with words, equations, graphs, and tables.

The 8th Connected group is partway through a book called Looking for Pythagoras...and this morning we found him!!!! In addition to learning the Pythagorean Theorem (ask an 8th grader to explain that to you!), we are also learning about irrational numbers and square roots.

8th algebra students are almost finished with chapter 1, which explains how variables are used in algebra. Chapter 2 focuses on uses of multiplication in algebra, and chapter 3 looks at addition in algebra.
